Laboratories and Seminars:

Enyzymology. Physiology of renal functions. Glomerular filtration. Examination of urine (physical, chemical, microscopic).


Lectures:

Introduction to medical biochemistry. Metabolic reactions. Cellular compartments and their biochemical functions. Catalysis, biocatalysis, properties of enzymes.

Structure and function of proteins - recapitulation. Mechanisms of enzymic catalysis. Classification of enzymes. Kinetics of enzymic reactions. Allosteric enzymes. Inhibitors of enzymic reactions.

Thermodynamics of biochemical processes. High-energy carriers. Redox reactions in biochemistry. An overwiev of the respiratory chain.

Coenzymes of the respiratory chain. Oxidative phosphorylation.

The basic strategy in the extraction of energy from foodstuffs. Digestion of hydrocarbons. Glycolysis under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate.

Gluconeogenesis. The citric acid cycle and its regulation, energy yield, anaplerotic reactions.

Pentose phosphate pathway. Glycogen metabolism and its regulation. UDP-derivatives of saccharides.

Metabolism of galactose and fructose. Glycoproteins and proteoglycans. Digestion and absorption of  lipids.

Lipolysis in adipocytes. Degradation and biosynthesis of fatty acids. Ketogenesis.

Lipoproteins. Phospholipids and glycolipids. The structure of biomembranes. Metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids. Synthesis of eicosanoids.

Cholesterol and its biosynthesis. Biosynthesis of bile acids. Calcitriol. Formation of steroid hormones. Integration of hydrocarbon and lipid metabolism.
