Active participation in the course. Each student has to submit 1 to 3 scientific summaries/digests (in CZECH or ENGLISH, the specific number of digests will be specified by the guarantor of the course at the beginning of the semester) of recent scientific papers published in primarily impacted scientific journals.

Syllabus
Last update: Jan Kovář (11.09.2022)

In this online course students will learn the basics about scientific writing. They will learn how to search for scientific papers in different research databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science etc. Students will learn how to write scientific summaries on a chosen clinically relevant article. Each student will then use this knowledge to write one to three (exact number will be specified at the beginning of the course by the guarantor) scientific summaries or digests (a digest being an already modified summary of a scientific paper where student writers implement their own ideas into their work) of the most recent original scientific papers. The expected length of one summary/digest should be somewhere between a half to two thirds of an A4 page.

This scientific writing course will be held in ENGLISH but is open for CZECH students to join as well. The written summaries/digests can be submitted in both languages, either in CZECH or in ENGLISH.

Timeline: At the beginning of the course students will, through online seminars or video tutorials, learn the basics on how to search within scientific databases and the basics about scientific writing. Then they will be divided into groups of 7 to 10 students (taking on the role of writers) and will be supervised by an already experienced student (taking on the role of an editor). The editor will help the student writers to pick a specific paper for summarization/digestion and then will help the writers with their writing process. The editor will be further responsible for approving the summary/digest as finished. Student writers will receive the credit for turning in one to three (this will be specified by the guarantor of the course at the beginning of the course) approved summaries/digests by the editor.
