Course completion requirements -
Last update: doc. MUDr. Viktor Kočka, Ph.D. (27.09.2020)

Organization of course
Cardiology, pneumology, cardiac surgery and angiology; Year 4
1) This course forms significant part of tuition in internal medicine - cardiovascular and pulmonary field. Emphasis will be on repetition of propedeutics and on gaining experience in diagnostic methods, differential diagnosis and basics of therapy. We believe we have prepared very interesting block, there is recent electronic textbook available (http://www.lf3.cuni.cz/cs/pracoviste/3interni/vyuka/elektronicke_srdce_a_plice/) and very nice ECG textbook (www.ekg-ucebnice.cz). Unfortunately, the ECG textbook had been damaged by hackers and is under reconstruction now.

2) Practical information: for clinical part please bring hospital shoes, coat, name badge, stethoscope, ECG ruler may be helpful. Please gather your group close to secretary office at every department, all teachers are informed about time schedule, in the exceptional case of late or no show please inform the secretary and this issue will be addressed.

Pneumology is taught at University Hospital Bulovka. All parts of this course take place at Pavilon 4 on the hill, it is opposite to Proton Centre. Lectures take place in 2nd floor.

3) Participation at this course must be preceded by successful passing of the exam „Basics of general pathology and pathophysiology" in Year 3. This will be verified by pre-clinical lecturer during the first week of this course. There is a designated space on the top part of logbook.

4) Credit conditions – there are 2 credits and both are independently entered into logbook and SIS. Should a student fail in any of those he will need to repeat the whole course.
a. Written multiple-choice test from pre-clinical part, test will be formed by 30 questions from pharmacology, 30 question from pathology and 30 questions from pathophysiology. Evaluation "passed" requires correct answer of at least 70% of questions in every field and at the same time at least 75% of all questions. This test is evaluated overall; therefore even a student who failed in one field only has to repeat the whole test again. Pre-clinical test will be scheduled at the end of every course block (teaching units 57 + 58 on last Friday); this test is open only to student of this course, no other students will be allowed to sit. Further tests will be scheduled: 2 in winter examination period, 2 in summer examination period before July and 1 in September – there will be no limit on number of students. Students who fail the test 3 times will be examined orally by a panel formed by examiners from fields of pharmacology, pathology and pathophysiology. In case this is needed one date will be scheduled in September.
Should there be any questions as far as organization of pre-clinical test is concerned, please contact:
- Ústav farmakologie, Věra Mendlová, tel. 267102524, email:vera.mendlova@lf3.cuni.cz OR
- Ústav normální, patologické a klinické fyziologie, as. MUDr. Iveta Matějovská, CSc., tel. 224902742, email: iveta.matejovska@lf3.cuni.cz

b. Clinical credit – there has to be 80% presence on practical teaching sessions with signed logbook, it is necessary to present correctly written admission patient notes including working diagnosis plus basic differential diagnosis and also to demonstrate physical examination at the patient bedside. This credit is organised by III. Internal medicine – cardiology clinic at the end of every course, teaching unit 59. In case of absence the student must agree the time individually with assigned examiner. This clinical credit can be taken 3 times only.

5) Examination is organized during examination period only. Successful passing of both above mentioned credits is necessary to register for the examination. Examination is oral; there is always 1 question from cardiology and/or pneumology. List of questions is available in SIS. Should pneumologist be not available then cardiologist will examine also from pneumology field. There will be 5 exam dates during winter examination period, 5 during summer examination period before July and 2 more in September; max. 30 students can register for each exam date. Further exam dates may or may not be scheduled in September based on capacity of our clinic – we recommend all students to pass this examination in due time.
Examination has two parts:
Part 1 - description of 2-3 ECG tracings. Exam will proceed to part 2 only in case of faultless description of both tracings; otherwise will be classified as "failed".
Part 2 - one question from cardiology and/or pneumology, always including clinically relevant pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical propedeutics, diagnostic methods and if applicable basic therapy. There will be emphasis on clinical propedeutics (history and physical examination); poor knowledge will result in classification "failed" even should the other knowledge be acceptable.
