Annotation In the course of General pharmacology in the Module IIA (in winter semester of the 3rd section of study)there are taught essentials of pharmacodynamics (e.g. interactions of drugs with receptors, molecular targets for drug action), fundamentals of pharmacokinetics (e.g. the half-life and its uses), drug interactions, introduction to clinical trials of drugs, adverse drug reactions, etc. Students are also taught pharmacology of autonomous system and a prescription writing.

Aims of the subject

The aim of the course is to learn students to understand general pharmacological principles. This understanding is important for the study of specific classes of drugs (scheduled later in courses of Module IIC). Physicians should understand how and why drugs act in order to use them rationally in therapy. An additional aim is to learn students to prescribe a drug.

Methods of teaching

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars and practicals. The seminars and practicals take place in a practical room of Department of Pharmacology. The room is equipped with 16 computer stations for students and a data display (see ?Databases, software and computers available to students in the pharmacology practical room (No. 523, Ruská 87) in ). Effects of drugs and pharmacokinetics are simulated on computers using special software (e.g. Simulated blood preasure and heart rate, MWPharm).
