The course makes part of the bachelor study program Nursing - General Nurse in the 1st year. It belongs to Module Humanities. In the course students learn argumentative skills and basic orientation in the various philosophical solutions to the problems of human life today. It also provides a basis for understanding the theoretical bases of medical ethics.

The aim of the course is to communicate a basic overview of the philosophical schools with a connection or historical influence on the nursing ethics, with special emphasis on philosophy of the end of the 20th century and the philosophy today. The ambition is to teach students to understand the theoretical foundations of modern medical ethics.

Teaching methods -

In lectures, students will be provided with the necessary sum of theoretical knowledge to be able to build their own rational argumentation; the basic philosophical themes relating to medical ethics (life, death, pain, freedom) will be discussed. The seminars develop further topics treated in lectures, the way of ethical and philosophical thinking will be presented on the major Czech thinkers (Comenius, Masaryk, Patocka). Students will learn the art of dialogue and penetrate the problem of philosophy as a "radical questioning".
