Sub-course module IIB. Surgical Propaedeutics introduces basic surgical concepts, terminology, instruments, concepts of asepsis, antisepsis, and sterilization, examination of surgical patient, preparing for the operation, the basic surgical techniques, practical training of wound suturing , bandage and dressing techniques, and the care of the wounds.

The aim of surgical propaedeutics is the acknowledgement of students with the theoretical and practical basics of surgery.

Lectures, practical training.

A condition for granting of credit is 80% attendance of training. Instruction can be replaced in circumstances worthy of particular interest only when the absence is one more than the permitted 20%. This substitution is possible only with the consent of the Head teacher of training (prof. Dušková). It must be implemented by the end of the summer semester of the school year.

The test is in the oral form in the following range of issues:

1st History of surgery, surgical branches and specializations.

2nd Basic principles of first aid and emergency care (blood circulation and cardiovascular system, breathing and ventilation, consciousness).

3rd Basic characteristics of shock, shock prevention in the first aid.

4th Asepsis, antisepsis, methods and types of sterilization and disinfection.

5th Types of anesthesia.

6th Examination of the patient in surgery.

7th Basic guide and principles of keeping medical documentation in surgery, including juristic aspects.

8th Common surgical disease: nosological units (tumors, cysts, ulcers, sinuses and fistulae, necrosis, gangrene), parralel illnesses and health problems (metabolic, cardiovascular, ventilatory, psychological and psychiatric), specific aspects (childhood, old age).

9th Inflammation and infection in surgery (wound, local, systemic, general), the prevention of tetanus, nosocomial infections.

10th Types of wounds and their properties, wound healing (per primam intention, per secundam intention).

11th Preoperative management of the patient (local, general), including the preparation of the surgical field.

12th Operating theatres and their management, surgical team.

13th Technologies in surgery: endoscopy, endoscope, microscope and microsurgery, laser.

14th Bleeding, physiological and surgical hemostasis.

15th Surgical medical supplies and devices, types of bandages and dressing materials, surgical materials (suture materials, materials for osteosynthesis, tissue substitutes), the basic instruments.

16th Administration of medicaments: injection, infusion, installation, infiltration, and others (ingestion, sticking-plaster, gel, cream, ointment, eye and ear drops).

17th Surgical drainage, catheterization.

18th Local and general postoperative care, postoperative complications.

19th Nutrition and dietetics in surgery.

20th Physiotherapy in surgery.

First possible regular examination date will be June 6, 2011.

Lectures:

Introduction, history of surgery, surgical branches and specializations.

Basic principles of the first aid and emergency care (blood circulation and cardiovascular system, respiration and ventilation, state of consciousness).

Basic characteristics of the shock, preventive care of the shock in the first aid.

Examination of the patient in surgery.

Basic guide and keeping of medical documentation in surgery, including the juristic aspects.

Preoperative management of the patient (local, general), including surgical field itself.

Types of the anesthesia.

Common surgical problems: nosologic units (tumors, cysts, ulcers, sinuses and fistulas, necrosis, gangrene), parallel diseases and problems (metabolic, cardiovascular, ventilation, psychological, and psychiatric), specific aspects (childhood, old age).

Asepsis, antisepsis, means and types of sterilization and disinfection.

Technologies in surgery- endoscope and endoscopy, microscope and microsurgery, lasers.

Surgical medical supplies- types of bandages and dressings, suture materials, basic instruments.

Administration of medicaments: injections, infusions, installations, infiltration, and others (ingestion, sticking-plaster, gel, cream, ointment, eye and ear drops).
