COURSE DESCRIPTION: The subject focuses on the techniques and vocabulary necessary for taking complete medical histories of patients having a variety of illnesses with different signs and symptoms. Emphasis is put on improving pronunciation and listening skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Students should learn how to take a complete medical history from Czech speaking patients. Students will be taught and are expected to demonstrate a structured and logical approach in asking questions of patients presenting with a variety of symptoms and diseases. Students are expected to develop and demonstrate the skills needed to (i) be clearly understood by Czech patients and to (ii) clearly comprehend the patient's response to their questions.

Czech for Foreigners - 3rd year - credit requirements:

presence at the practical classes (minimum of 70%);

- 2 revision tests:.mid-term and final tests- 30 and 40 points respectively. During the semester there will be two short tests with 10 points for each passed test. One history-taking interview with a patient in a hospital ward is obligatory- 10 points. There are no resits for any of those tests taken during the course. If the student completes all requirements with the total score of 70% or higher, and meets presence requirements both in classes and a ward in hospital, he/she gains the winter credit. Otherwise, he/she has to take the credit test not earlier than in week 15th of the semester (70% pass) with 3 possible re-sittings.

Summer term:

The final exam is oral only. It is a student-patient interview focused on history taking and presenting complaints. All the topics discussed during both winter and summer term can be included  (see the syllabus above). An analysis of a brief Czech text (case history) is also a part of the exam. Understanding to medical terminology and phrases are tested.
