Cílem předmětu je začlenit translatologii jako integrovanou disciplínu do paradigmatu společenských věd a vytvořit tak podmínky k hlubšímu poznání procesu / produktu překladu / tlumočení. Předmět je metodologicky orientován na prosazování interdisciplinarity (psychologie, kognitivní vědy, sociologie, kulturologie, lingvistika, literární věda, fonetika) a experimentování s novými metodami a technikami (např. kvalitativní výzkum, šetření, statistické postupy, metody korpusové lingvistiky apod.).

Náplní semináře je:
• četba a rozbor teoreticko-metodologických textů ve vztahu ke zpracovávaným tématům disertace;
• diskuse nad teoreticko-metodologickými otázkami vyplývajícími z disertačních projektů;
• prezentace zpracovaných teoreticko-metodologických témat k SDZK a diskuse nad nimi;
debaty s odborníky z jiných pracovišť, včetně zahraničních odborníků – vedle přímé výuky se počítá i s využitím videokonferencí, streamingu, případně účast studentů na na mezinárodních teoreticko-metodologicky zaměřených seminářích (Univerzity v Tarragoně, v Lovani, v Ženevě a v Budapešti).
