Celebrities played a significant part in an individual's identity formation throughout the 20th century, but unlike the mass-media celebrity of yesterday, today’s new-media celebrities exist in the same virtual space as their fans and share the same communication practices. This “context collapse” taking place on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram or YouTube gives rise to a whole new type of “home-made” celebrities who achieve fame while bypassing the systems traditionally responsible for making and sustaining celebrity. The aim of the course is to explore the history of celebrity (via the lens of media history), the sociology of celebrity and its function in society, and finally its transformation into new-media celebrity in the age of collapsed contexts.
