COURSE OUTLINE This two-week course is an intensive introduction to medieval handwriting in the Latin West from the late Roman period until the late Caroline minuscule of the 11th century. It is designed for those who wish to acquire the skills that will enable them to work with unpublished Latin manuscript materials from the medieval period. Students will be introduced to all the main medieval systems of abbreviation, along with the principles of transcription, through daily exercises in identifying, dating, and transcribing various scripts. The course meets three days per week (Monday-Wednesday-Friday), for 3 hour-long sessions. ASSIGNMENTS 1. There will be daily exercises in transcription, which we will go over in class together. 2. There will also be 3 in-class quizzes on abbreviations and script identification.
