The course will map the history of Christianity from the downfall of the Western Roman Empire until the 15th century, in the frame of the political, social, and cultural history of the Middle Ages.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, we will study the history and development of the Church as an institution (papacy, councils, hierarchy, monastic orders, etc.), the milestones of the christian thought and of the Western spirituality, and the main cultural institutions of the Middle Ages.

The course will touch upon the following major themes:

History and organization of the Church from the Antiquity to the Middle Ages
The Bible in the Middle Ages
Monastic orders
Intellectual History of the Middle Ages, with a special attention to the University
The relationship between Philosophy and Theology in the Middle Ages
Orthodoxy, Heterodoxy, Heresy

Course completion requirements

- Regular attendance at the lessons.

- Fulfilling the assignments (typically reading an article or a book chapter) before each lesson.

- Writing a short essay (max. 5 pages) by the end of the course on a topic chosen together with the teacher. The essay will be discussed during the oral exam.

- Passing an oral exam (discussion of the essay + some questions concerning the program of the course).

 

- The final grade will be the result of the combined evaluation of the essay and of the oral exam.

The course takes place in English and in presence at the Centre for Medieval Studies (Jilská 1). 

Each lesson will typically constist of four parts: 1. discussing the assigned reading; 2. explanations of the teacher on a specific topic; 3. common reading of a textual passage from a medieval text; questions and discussion.
