Cílem předmětu je podat přehled epoch německé literatury do r. 1700 v kontextu dobových politických poměrů
(sociálních struktur, státních a mocenských útvarů), filosofických proudů a kultury (architektury, výtvarného
umění, hudby). Výklad bere průběžně ohled na to, že středověká a raně novověká umělecká paradigmata i funkce
a pozice umění jsou odlišné od moderních a že je k nim třeba posluchačům zprostředkovat specifické klíče.
