The course focuses on basic syntactic concepts and structures. After a general introduction to the study of syntax (definition of a sentence as the basic unit of this level, relations of predication, complementation, modification), attention is paid to the description of a simple sentence in terms of correspondence between the sentence type and its discourse function, constitutive and facultative clause elements and their semantic roles (syntactic and semantic patterns), the realization of sentence elements. The multiple sentence is presented with emphasis on the major types of subordinate clauses. Treatment of the complex sentence pays attention to semantic structure, including temporal relations.
While the lecture introduces the theoretical background of the syntactic phenomena discussed with regard to differences in English and Czech grammars, the aim of the seminars is to deepen and practise the knowledge in the field and provide students with space for independent work (with recommended literature on individual topics). During the whole semester, students collect material for the final seminar work - an independent analysis and description of simple and multiple sentences.

Předmět se zaměřuje na základní syntaktické pojmy a struktury. Po obecném úvodu do studia syntaxe (vymezení věty jako základní jednotky této roviny, vztahy predikace, komplementace, modifikace) se pozornost věnuje popisu věty jednoduché z hlediska korespondence mezi větným typem a jeho diskursní funkcí, konstitutivních a fakultativních větných členů a jejich sémantických rolí (valenční a intenční větné vzorce), realizace větných členů (zejména neverbální přísudek ve srovnání s češtinou). V oblasti popisu souvětí je důraz kladen na vztahy mezi větami v souvětí (parataxe a hypotaxe) a typologii vedlejších vět. Problematika anglické syntaxe je prezentována ve srovnání s syntaxí češtiny.
Zatímco v přednášce jsou studenti seznamování s teoretickými základy probíraných syntaktických jevů s přihlédnutím k rozdílům v pohledu na příslušný jev v anglických a českých gramatikách, semináře slouží k prohloubení a procvičení znalostí v dané oblasti a poskytují studentům prostor k samostatné práci (průběžně je studentům doporučována sekundární literatura k jednotlivým tématům). Během celého semestru shromažďují studenti materiál k závěrečné seminární práci - samostatnému rozboru a popisu vět a souvětí.

Credit requirements include attendance at seminars, successful completion of partial tests during the semester and the final test, and submitting the seminar paper.
The final test, which is one of the requirements of the couse, takes the form of a test with two attempts. The test must be completed in the academic year in which the student enrolled the course.
All credit requirements must be met by the end of the examination period of the academic year in which the student enrolled the course.
To get the "zápočet" you must:
A. comply with the instructions on moodle and other assigned activities
B. participate in classes
C. complete the following tests:
two in-class home reading tests completed during the semester, you can re-sit these tests once.
a final test covering the topics dealt with in the seminars and the lecture (students are entitled to one re-sit). The test is written after the summer term. The final test pass limit is 70%.
D. All students (in pairs) submit their analysis of a multiple sentence

Závěrečný test, který je jedním z požadavků na splnění atestace, probíhá formou testu se dvěma pokusy. Test je nutno absolvovat v akademickém roce, ve kterém si student předmět zapsal.
Všechny požadavky pro zápočet je nutné splnit do konce zkouškového období akademického roku, ve kterém si student předmět zapsal.
Dalšími podmínkami udělení zápočtu jsou:
účast na semináři
splnění dílčích zadaných aktivit (cvičení v moodle)
dva in-class testy na základě samostatné četby
rozbor složitého souvětí ve dvojici

3. Slovesná valence, větné vzorce v angličtině.
4. Anglické protějšky českých vět jednočlenných slovesných, neslovesné věty v angličtině a v češtině.
5. Větné členy a jejich sémantické role: podmět. Shoda podmětu s přísudkem.
6. Syntax a sémantika předmětových doplnění (předmět přímý, nepřímý, předložkový).
7. Příslovečné určení: adjunkty, disjunkty a konjunkty.
8. Rozvíjející větné členy (přívlastek, přístavek, doplněk).
