The subject is a combination of introduction to linguo-didactic, applied linguistics and practical language seminar aiming to develop advanced language competences at the levels of C1 and C2, using specialist texts on language teaching and acquisition in the form of text-, genre- and content-based approaches to language teaching. The students gain greater command of advanced language forms at the level of grammar, lexis and discourse while encountering key topics and issues in the fields of language teaching and acquisition. Using short micro-teaching slots on selected aspects of grammatical and lexical features they learn essential techniques of presenting new language and they learn to give and receive feedback. The subject is taught in English.

1. Introductory seminar - English in contemporary world.
2.–4. Problematic tenses. Language and identity.
5.–6. Indirect speech. Applied linguistics.
7.–8. Verb voice. Second anguage acquisition.
9.–10. Modality. Language proficiency and what it means to "know" a language.
11.–12. Verb complementation (gerund, infinitive). Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

All of the credit requirements must be fulfilled by the end of the exam period in the academic year in which the student enrolled for the subject.

Credit requiremetns (applicable also to online teaching)

Assessment is continual. Credit is granted on the basis of:

· regular attendance (with a maximum of TWO absences during the term)

· active participation in exercises, discussion and peer feedback

· completion of all assignments set by the teacher (including those relating to work with the teaching portfolio)

· regular learning of compulsory vocabulary (5 words a day, set in the Moodle)

· pass in end-of-semester lexico-grammatical test (Winter Term, examination period*)

Participating in vocabulary research (completing an online, anonymous vocabulary test).

Credit test:

Students will be offered ONE re-sit if they fail on first attempt.

Additional information:

English Language Seminar for Teachers I (Winter Term) is a prerequisite for English Language Seminar for Teachers II, which is offered in the Summer Term.

Only those students who have obtained credit for English Language Seminar for Teachers I will be permitted to register for English Language Seminar II in February.
