Course Profile: This course aims to give the students a general outline of the most significant events in American literature, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on canonical authors. These seminars complement lectures which reside in presenting a particular literary movement, including its social and cultural background. These are then followed by a close reading session which focuses on the selected seminar texts (short stories, plays, novels/extracts etc.).

Profil kurzu: Předmět "Americká literatura I" tvoří komplementární kurz, v jehož přednáškové části se student obeznámí se základní vývojovou linií americké literatury od 17 až po konec 19. století, včetně historického a sociálního pozadí. Tato výkladová část je prakticky podepřena ilustrativními ukázkami americké prózy a v menší míře i poezie a dramatu. Přednášky tedy v chronologickém sledu uvádějí konkrétní (víceméně jednolitá) období v americké literatuře, která jsou vesměs koncipována jako literární reflexe daného historického období. Na přednášku pak navazuje tzv. "close reading session", tedy řízené čtení zadaných seminárních textů v angličtině, které lze vnímat jako průvodní materiál k přednáškovému výkladu.

Aim of the course

Studující získává přehled o kontextu stěžejních děl americké literatury, na historickém půdorysu raného osidlování, přes boj o nezávislost na Británii až po rekonstrukční období po občanské válce.

Studující rozvíjí své kompetence v oblasti komunikativních dovedností (parafráze anglického textu, porozumění původnímu anglickému textu po minimálních edičních úpravách).

Studující si osvojuje širší (terciární) slovní zásobu a frazeologii.

Podmínky pro splnění studijních povinností (zápočtu)

Požadavky k zápočtu: 80% účast na seminářích (tj. povolené jsou 2 neomluvené absence)

Kvalifikační práce: Student může psát buď velmi krátkou esej (400 slov) přímo v hodině (vypisuji minimálně dva různé termíny), nebo odevzdat delší esej (a 1400 slov) psanou doma.

Learning outcomes

1.     Výukový cyklus (literatura koloniálního a revolučního období)

Studující charakterizuje vývoj euroamerické společnosti 17. a 18. století a jeho literární a mytologickou reflexi (city upon a hill, manifest destiny, cradle of democracy, atp.)

Studující popíše utváření svébytných kulturních institucí a žánrové diverzity, vyplývající ze situace dynamicky se rozvíjející společnosti na severoamerickém kontinentu.

Studující aktivně použije slovní zásobu a frazeologii, nabytou při čtení a rozboru zadaných děl, např. přídavná jména popisující povahové vlastnosti (Franklin).

Studující parafrázuje argumentaci ve prospěch zastupitelské demokracie coby alternativy k monarchismu (Paine)
