Annotation -
Each year, a patristic work will be chosen to work with. Foreign students are welcome to participate: at the beginning of the course, an individual curriculum will be prepared for each student, according to his or her language skills and other possibilities. The output of the course would be a short paper (7 to 10 pages) on the topic related to the focus of the course.

Aim of the course -

1. Knowledge (Remember)

  • Students will be able to remember the main theological and historical themes associated with Ambrose’s writings De Paradiso and De Noe.
  • Students will be able to list key terms and concepts of patristic exegesis related to the interpretation of Genesis.
  • Students will be able to recall the fundamental characteristics of the Latin patristic tradition and its hermeneutical approaches to biblical texts.

2. Comprehension (Understand)

  • Students will be able to explain the main exegetical methods used by Ambrose and their theological implications.
  • Students will be able to describe the context in which Ambrose’s texts were written and their relationship to earlier patristic traditions.
  • Students will be able to interpret the significance of various motifs in the texts (paradisus, arca Noe) in the light of early Christian symbolism.

3. Application (Apply)

  • Students will be able to apply fundamental patristic exegetical methods when reading Latin texts.
  • Students will be able to use their acquired knowledge to analyse and interpret other patristic exegetical works.
  • Students will be able to translate theoretical knowledge into practice by formulating their own exegetical commentaries on key passages from the texts.

4. Analysis (Analyse)

  • Students will be able to distinguish different layers of meaning in Ambrose’s interpretation of Genesis.
  • Students will be able to compare Ambrose’s exegesis with the exegetical approaches of other patristic authors (e.g., Origen, Augustine).
  • Students will be able to analyse the argumentative structure of Ambrose’s texts and their theological reasoning.

5. Evaluation (Evaluate)

  • Students will be able to critically assess the impact of Ambrose’s exegesis on later Christian theological thought.
  • Students will be able to evaluate to what extent patristic interpretations of Genesis remain relevant for contemporary biblical studies.
  • Students will be able to assess the differences between allegorical and literal interpretations of biblical texts within the patristic tradition.

6. Creation (Create)

  • Students will be able to develop an academic presentation on patristic exegesis of the Book of Genesis.
  • Students will be able to produce a written exegetical commentary on selected passages from Ambrose’s texts.
  • Students will be able to design a structured discussion on patristic interpretations of paradise and Noah’s ark within the context of Christian theology.

  • Aktivní účast v semináři včetně přípravy textu (max. 3 absence)
  • Seminární práce na téma schválené vyučujícím:
    • rozsah: min. 7 NS, max. 12 NS (= 12600–21600 znaků vč. mezer a poznámek pod čarou);
    • citační úzus dle normy KTF, seznam bibliografie vč. pramenů a sekundární literatury;
    • u práce se očekává, že bude mít všechny náležitosti VŠ prací, o nichž studenti vědí z kurzu Metodologie.
