Annotation -
The course introduces students to the field of pharmacy, its place in the healthcare system, and pharmacist's role in practice. It also covers basic pharmaceutical categories and principles of healthcare. It provides the fundamental knowledge necessary to understand the importance of pharmacy and pharmacists in the healthcare system and in society in general. The knowledge gained in this course will be further developed and interconnected during the course of further study.

The course ends with credit.

To obtain credit, it is necessary to attend the seminars and achieve a minimum of 12 points in the written test. The test contains 20 closed questions with a choice of 4 answers, with only one correct answer.

Learning outcomes -

The course provides a basic theoretical framework for courses taught by the Department of Social and Clinical Pharmacy in higher level of study: Law and Ethics for Pharmacists, Communication for Pharmacists, Pharmaceutical Care I and II, Clinical Pharmacy I, Social Pharmacy, and Pharmacists in Healthcare Practice. After completing the course, students will be able to define basic concepts in the field of healthcare and pharmacy, characterize the importance of pharmacy and pharmacists in the healthcare system and in society in general, and understand the basic principles of healthcare.

Based on the knowledge and skills acquired, students will be able to: 

Characterize the importance of pharmacy in the healthcare system

Characterize pharmaceutical care, its scope, development, and give examples of current trends

Characterize the importance and role of pharmacists in the healthcare system and in society

Define the basic categories of healthcare (health, illness, and related concepts) and pharmacy (medicines, medicinal products, and related concepts)

Characterize the importance of medicines from the perspective of patients, healthcare professionals, and society. 

Give examples and describe the importance of key personalities and events in the history of pharmacy

Characterize healthcare and pharmacy before the year 1989 

Distinguish and characterize the activities of a pharmacist in various branches of pharmacy 

Distinguish and characterize the activities of a pharmacist in practical pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and clinical pharmacy 

Characterize the content and importance of prevention in healthcare  

Characterize the role of pharmacists in prevention in healthcare

Define official information sources on medicines and their content

Discuss the differences between various sources of information about medicines and master the basic principles of working with them

Describe the basic aspects and requirements of compounding in pharmacies
