The course focuses on specific vocabulary and grammar enabling students to take an English-speaking patient's medical history and on improving the students' own English speaking skills.

Aim of the course -
The primary purpose of the subject is to teach students to take an English-speaking patient's medical history and to expand the students' knowledge of lay and technical medical terminology.
Using specialized medical histories as a base, the subject will also aid the students' general language competences, mainly in the areas of grammar and syntax.

Primárním cílem předmětu je naučit studenty odebrat kompletní anamnézu u anglicky hovořícího pacienta a rozšířit jejich znalosti odborné i laické lékařské terminologie.
Na základě specializovaných anamnéz pak předmět přispěje i ke zdokonalení obecně jazykových kompetencí studentů, a to zejména v oblasti gramatiky a syntaxe.

In case students do not meet the mandatory attendance, they will have to take a test at the faculty. The test covers specialized medical terminology, syntax, and grammar (passing score 70%). The remaining credit requirements still have to be met.

Summer Term - Credit:
- active participation (2 absences maximum)
- completing e-learning tasks on the Moodle platform (2 in the summer term; deadline June 30, 2025)
- giving a presentation on a specialized medical topic (8-12 minutes)

Final Exam:
Getting winter and summer term credit is a requirement to sign up for the final exam.
The exam consists of two parts: test and an oral part.
The test covers medical terminology (specialized and lay; see the lexical list for both semesters), grammar, syntax, and reading comprehension (see the e-learning tasks). The passing score (to enter the oral part) is 70%.
The oral part covers the ability to take and review an English-speaking patient's medical history.
The final grade is a combination of the results of the test and the oral part (the proportion of the sections is 1:2 in favor of the oral part).
The dates of the examinations will be posted in SIS - see EXAM DATES. For exact oral part times, see the course page in Moodle.
If a student fails to complete the e-learning tasks within the set deadline, they will have to complete the course in the following academic year!
C1-C2 Language Certificates:
If a student has a C1-C2 level language certificate according to CEFR (no older than four years!), or a document testifying to their spending time abroad (at least three months), they may submit it to the teachers and pass the course without having to meet mandatory attendance requirements. Consequently, students only have to meet the other credit requirements (e-learning tasks and giving a presentation); then, they may sign up for the final exam.
These students must give their presentation in the winter term and take the test in the winter exam period. If they do not get both credits in the winter term, they will have to meet the summer term limit!

The final decision on accepting the materials is within the competence of the course guarantor (Václav Koutný). Fast-track documents have to be submitted to the guarantor by the end of the second week of the winter term (October 13, 2024).

- plnění e-learningových úkolů na platformě Moodle (4 za semestr; lhůta 30. 6. 2025) včetně odevzdání písemného úkolu
V případě nesplnění podmínek zápočtu budou studenti psát prezenčně na fakultě zápočtový test zaměřený na znalost specializovaného lékařského lexika, syntaxe a gramatiky (hranice úspěchu 70 %). Povinnost splnit e-learningové úkoly trvá i v tomto případě.
Letní semestr - zápočet:

Závěrečná zkouška:
Podmínkou připuštění ke zkoušce je obdržení zápočtu za zimní i letní semestr.
Zkouška se skládá ze dvou částí - písemného testu a ústní části.
Písemný test ověřuje znalost lékařské terminologie (laické i specializované - viz lexikální seznam za oba semestry), probrané gramatiky, syntaxe a porozumění textu (viz e-learningové aktivity). Hranice postupu k ústní části je 70 %.
Ústní část ověřuje schopnost odebrání anamnézy od anglicky hovořícího pacienta.
Výsledná známka sestává ze skóre dosaženého v obou částech zkoušky (poměr je následující - písemná část 1:2 ústní část).
Termíny zkoušky jsou zveřejněny v aplikaci "Termíny zkoušek - přihlašování". Zápis na přesný čas ústní části zkoušky bude poskytnut mailem den před písemným testem.
Pokud student nesplní e-learning ve stanovené lhůtě, plní předmět až následující akademický rok.
Studenti s jazykovými certifikáty C1-C2:
Mají-li studenti jazykový certifikát úrovně C1-C2 dle SERR (ne starší než čtyři roky!) či materiál dosvědčující jejich pobyt v zahraničí (alespoň tři měsíce), mohou jej předložit vyučujícím a splnit předmět bez povinné prezence. Pro dosažení zápočtů tedy tito studenti musí splnit pouze ostatní zápočtové povinnosti (e-learningové úkoly a prezentaci) a poté mohou přistoupit ke zkoušce.
Tito studenti musí prezentaci přednést v zimním semestru a zkoušku složit v zimním zkouškovém období. Pokud v ZS neobdrží oba zápočty, v letním semestru pro ně platí podmínka povinné prezence!

Knowledge of Latin and Greek medical terminology, including the basics of word formation (Greek stems).
