The course “New Spatial Forms of Theatre and Expanded Scenography” explores connections,
interactions and convergences of performative events and new spatial forms of theatre in the last
decades of the 20th century and the 21st century in the light of expanded scenography. In this
context, students will explore exemplary forms such as environmental theatre, performance
events, interventions in public space, the genealogies of visual and theatrical performance with
their shared spatial typologies, as well as contemporary site-specific immersive
theatre/performance through the critical presentation of topical case studies, mainly by artists in
Greece. Particular emphasis is placed on the core spatial, aesthetic and dramaturgical aspects
of performances, in conjunction with the radical transformations in the production and reception
of theatre and performance space.
