Annotation -
In 1988, to remember the year "1968" and its context has been regarded in the Federal Republic as premature; today one might get the impression it has become obsolete. On the other hand, a larger historical distance may offer the opportunity of a more precise re-thinking of earlier attempts at interpreting the events. From a liberal point of view, already before the German reunification, they have been seen as the second and real emergence of the Federal Republic - due to the striking changes in social life and political culture -, whereas today that 'revolutionary' interlude is preferably blamed for the instable, critical situation of Germany and other countries in general.
What literature has got to do with all that - apart from having to accept being declared dead as a bourgeois dinosaur in the "Kursbuch" by H.M. Enzensberger -, that is, what literature might have got to do with a subculture and counterculture or some kind of post-modernism or just "BeatPopPorno" (Klaus Briegleb 1993) - all that does not prove a simple question at all. Did "1968" mean a literary and cultural revolution as well, or did literature just - and practically immediately - inherit the part of reappraising political disillusionment, that is, of licking the wounds of failure as soon as they had been caused?
The seminar aims at combining an introduction into basic critical analyses with texts by 'participants', contemporaries and retrospective views without necessarily sticking to the years of first editions. As might go without saying, "1968" is as well to be analysed as an international phenomenon. Texts and authors to be scrutinized will include Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Urs Jaeggi, Elfriede Jelinek, Jürgen Ploog, Bernward Vesper, and Inge Viett. The volume „experimentalní poezie“, edited by Bohumila Grögerová and Jozef Hiršal in Prague in 1967 will be taken into account as well.
