Optional seminar for doctoral students of the field f12 Physics Education and General problems of Physics. The aim of the seminar is to provide a "birds eye view" on parts of physics generally taught in schools (e.g. from the point of view of variational principles, conservation laws, symmetry etc.) and to connect it with a more general views on how physics investigates and describes the world. Topics as the role of reductionism, postmodern critics of science etc. will be also mentioned. The content of the seminar may be adapted according to interests of its participants.

Specific topics may be adapted according to interests of participants of the seminar. The offer will include:

Cosmology: models, observations, speculations, humans in the Universe (including anthropic principle).

Nature likes extremes and symmetries (variational formulation of physics laws, conservation laws and symmetry).

Reductionism - yes or not?

Scientific faults and controversial topics ("N-rays", cold fusion etc.)

Postmodern criticism of science and how "science strikes back".
