Annotation
Advanced molecular techniques are now routinely used in the microbiological laboratory. Student of this course will thus learn common molecular methods, such as PCR and its modifications, MALDI-TOF, next generation sequencing (NGS) and others utilized in microbiology. In addition, the students will acquire knowledge about specific incorporation of these methods in the clinical diagnostic procedures. The course is primarily aimed at students interested in scientific work. During the first practical, the students will perform an isolation of nucleic acids, PCR setup and subsequent detection using gel electrophoresis. The second practical will aim at performing an identification of bacterial cultures using MALDI-TOF. For practical exercises, it is necessary to divide the students into groups of 4 students. The reason is the practical implementation of the PCR reaction and work with MALDI-TOF MS, which cannot be carried out in larger numbers (practical involvement of students would not be possible). For that reason, the inclusion of practical exercises in the schedule is only indicative, and the actual implementation of practical exercises will be agreed upon by the teacher individually with the students according to their schedule at the last seminar.
