The course aims to familiarise students with the elementary principles of sociolinguistics, the field of social varieties and regional dialectology. Further topics discussed include factors which inform language as a social phenomenon, such as social class, age, gender, ethnicity, and aspects of social structure that influence the choice of language means at different levels of language hierarchy, i.e. the phonological, morpho-syntactic and lexical level.
