Annotation -
The course is an introduction to comparative study of cultural systems and is based upon theoretical and ethnographic material provided by linguistic anthropology. As a field of inquiry, linguistic anthropology focuses on studying various aspects of the multifarious and dynamic relationship between communication and culture, or society. After examining semiotic conception of language, we go on explaining certain relevant parts of synchronic linguistics in order to gain the body of knowledge that is relevant for further studies of topics within the broader theme of "language and culture" – e.g., relationship among language, ethnicity and culture; language behavior and the limits of its awareness; interrelations among language system, language use and language ideology; communicative competence as related to interethnic attitudes; language and gender; direct and mediated communication; lanague, thought and world view; language, social identity and stratification.
