Annotation -
This course introduces students to selected topics in LGBTQ+ psychology through interdisciplinary approaches grounded in current, evidence-based science. The course offers a detailed overview of the development and understanding of areas of human sexual and gender diversity in psychology, as well as in fields relevant to various helping professions. This includes addressing historical dead ends such as the pathologization of LGBTQ+ individuals, uncritical binary thinking, or exclusively essentialist conceptualizations. The course includes discussions on the conceptualization and revision of coming out models, insights into minority stress theory as a key interpretive framework for mental health disparities, understanding gender diversity (not only in terms of transition but also non-binarity), sexual fluidity, intersex variations, and other critical moments that are part of widely accepted affirmative and culturally competent approaches today. Emphasis is placed not only on theoretical grounding but also on experiences that are transferable to interdisciplinary practice. The course will also feature guest speakers with expert and/or relevant lived experience.

Aim of the course -

Specific Acquired Knowledge:

Students will understand the specific life experiences of LGBTQ+ people, for instance, recognizing that the concept of coming out is simplistic and has specific nuances for each individual, including psychological challenges summarized under the term minority stress. Students will understand the differences between sexual orientation (and will recognize its diverse dimensions) and gender identity and expression, as well as the differences between sex, gender identity, and the gender normative system. Students will gain insights into the process of gender transitioning and understand what it entails both in the Czech Republic and globally. Students will also be familiar with historical or lingering pathologization and how, for example, the politicization of topics continues to influence issues in the psychology of gender, sexual, and relational diversity.

Acquired Skills:

After completing the course, students will possess not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experiences that they can further critically apply and reflect on in their future practice. Students will be well-versed in topics across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, capable of distinguishing the specifics of various sexualities, and have an overview of gender diversity, which they can further develop in their future practice or studies.
