Annotation -
"Nature vs. Law: Contexts of Materialism" The contrast between phýsis and nómos has accompanied European philosophy almost from its beginnings. With it, an event of nature (phýsis) that ultimately determines the cosmic motion is understood in such a way that it opposes all attempts of human beings to establish laws (nómoi) by his or her own efforts. Remarkably, the postulate of the regularity of nature, which is also and especially binding for everyone, was emphasized above all by the early materialists Leucippus and Democritus, later by Epicurus and Lucretius, before experiencing a unique renaissance, especially in the French Enlightenment in the 18th century, with materialist authors such as D’Holbach, La Mettrie and Helvetius, but also with Montesquieu and Rousseau, among others, and led to its reception by Marx. The interesting thing about this constellation is that, with reference to laws that are not made by man but dictated by nature, it is less a science of nature than a theory of society that is to be established.
