This course provides the foundations of the Actor Analysis method that is used for assessment of decision-making processes at different levels - this method is applicable for different cases in sustainable development and the environmental protection agenda. The theme is concerned with (sustainable) development as a whole-of- community project in which different social groups are involved; its aim is to uncover the interconnections between various actors who have different interests within this project and who have an influence on its outcomes. If applied to a specific case, the AA method helps to untangle the complex web of relationships that permit a study to be made of the issues of power, legitimacy, trust, transparency and the process of communication between these societal actors. The theoretical basis of this approach is philosophical pragmatism and respect for diverse views and the ethical sources of responsible behaviour. From a practical point of view the method enables an analysis of real issues that are associated with conflicts of interests - it is considered to be a precautionary measure that helps to identify positive relations, sources of trust and non-transparent and antidemocratic practices in these conflict situations. Important social actors will be introduced during the course and an analysis of a real case will be made jointly.
