The aim of the course is to critically reflect and discuss current issues of work and organizations in late modern
globalized society. Individual reading of the literature and subsequent lectures and seminars aim to achieve this.
The course concludes with a written paper on a topic of the student's interest and an examination.
Selected topics:
(1)Risks, vulnerability and insecurity of work (non-standard work, precarious work, migration for work);
(2) Paid and unpaid work (domestic work, volunteering, gender and work);
(3) Vocations, professions and professionalization (the changing roles of professionals in public life,
professionalism as a discursive practice;
(4) Organization and power (the nature of power and authority, power elites, organizational forms and their
transformations with an emphasis on power).
Across the themes, questions of the relationship between work/organizations and inequalities in society run
through. Students are also introduced to different ways of empirically investigating the themes and reflect on their
methodology.
