The class introduces -- in conjunction with the study of spoken Chinese -- a basic set of characters understood not only individually but also as part of a system that reflects the peculiarities of Chinese language. The class confronts the student with both modern and ancient aspects of Chinese culture: interactively, through film and the reading of the dramatic "Records of the Historian," the first comprehensive history of China. The class develops mindfulness, visual memory, and critical thinking.

The basic set of characters is taken from the textbook Boya Chinese. The set is further supplemented with the aim of better memory fixation.

Character analysis into "radicals" and "domain headers" is based on the dictionary Shuowen, the first work to consistently employ such analysis in the classification/organization of vocabulary.

Records of the Historian translated by William Nienhauser (ed.) and Burton Watson

Last update: Jan Vihan, Ph.D. (19.09.2017)

The course does not presuppose any prior knowledge of Chinese.  Simultaneous study of spoken Chinese, regular class preparation, and participation in class discussion, on the ohter hand, are required.
