Annotation -
The course is conceived as an unconventional introduction to the philosophy of Kant and Bolzano through a direct comparison of two major works of European philosophy – Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Bolzano's Theory of Science. The course will proceed as follows. First, we will read and interpret a section of the Critique of Pure Reason independently, introducing the main concepts and thought progression of the relevant passage. Then we will read Bolzano's commentary on the relevant passage from New Anti-Kant by Bolzano's student František Příhonský and interpret the concepts and considerations of Bolzano's Theory of Science used in Bolzano's critique of Kant. Finally, we will attempt to evaluate the meaning and validity of these considerations and move on to reading and interpreting another passage from the Critique. The concept of the course is made possible by the structure of New Anti-Kant, about which more needs to be said. In 1837, Bolzano learned of an Italian literary competition on the topic of criticism of Kant's philosophical system. The plan to submit the required Latin or French text to the competition was ultimately abandoned. However, Bolzano arranged with his student František Příhonský that Příhonský would take on the task and, under his guidance, systematize Bolzano's objections to Kant's famous work in a running German commentary on the Critique of Pure Reason. Their inspiration for this concept was Leibniz's New Essays on Human Understanding, which commented on Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding. The result of ten years of collaboration between Příhonský and Bolzano was The New Anti-Kant. This clearly and elegantly written work fell into oblivion after its publication. In recent decades, a new German edition, two English translations, and a French translation have been published. In the first semester, we will read the Critique of Pure Reason in Czech (with reference to the German original) from the Introduction to the Analytics of Concepts. We will read the New Anti-Kant, probably in English (with reference to the German original) or in a working Czech translation.
