The course focuses on three inter-related issues. First, sociology of conflict and revolutions (Coser, Dahrendorf, Ch. W. Mills, Ch. Tilly). Second, selected theories of terrorism based on empirical research (M. Juergensmeyer, R. Pape, P. Krueger etc.). Third, sociological approaches toward war (origins of war, war and gender, war ideology vs. small group cohesion etc.).

Podmínkou pro udělení atestace je aktivní účast v hodinách, četba zadané literatury v rozsahu 100 stran a absolvování závěrečného písemného testu. Students are expected to be active during the lectures, read selected book chapters (about 100 pages) and pass the final test.
