Tento předmět přináší doktorandům vhled do spektra různých moderních přístupů k diskursu (např. psaného i mluveného, veřejného i privátního, aj), což je oblast nepostradatelná též v didaktické praxi. Stojí na průsečíku různých parolových disciplín, včetně textové lingvistiky, stylistiky, pragmatiky, analýzy diskursu, konverzační analýzy, atp. Vybavuje doktorandy podstatnými vědomostmi i klíčovými dovednostmi k uchopení specifik různých komunikačních situací a jim odpovídajících jazykových projevů. V neposlední řadě předmět nepřímo kultivuje praktické stylizační dovednosti, které se mohou promítnout například do formulační úrovně dizertační práce.
Hlavní tematické bloky:
1. Komunikační událost a typy kontextů, standardy textovosti, koheze a koherence, tematické posloupnosti a organizace diskursu;
2. Různé stylistické tradice a přístupy ke stylu, typologie textů, žánrů, stylových variet, registrů, aj.,
3. Pragmatické principy, teorie řečových aktů, presupozice a implikatury;
4. Mluvenost a psanost, různé školy a přístupy ke konverzaci
