The aim of this course is to provide students with a brief overview of 18th and 19th century German literature in a European context (the Enlightenment, the Sturm und Drang movement, the German Classics). An integral part of the course is the explanation of the main literary historical concepts (Aufklärung, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, Klassik) and the interpretation of the developmental tendencies of the prevailing literary types and genres. Literary phenomena are presented against the historical, philosophical and cultural background of the 18th and 19th centuries, including a survey of various interpretations of literary-historical development and the main aesthetic theories. Emphasis is placed on the so-called Weimar classics (Goethe and Schiller). Seminar work will focus on selected texts of the period and on the analysis of poetic, prose and dramatic works. The course covers the following topics: the philosophical foundations of the Enlightenment, rationalism and sentimentalism as the main trends in Enlightenment literature; lyrical works, the Enlightenment theatre (Gottsched, Lessing), the influence of sentimentalism (Klopstock), the novel in the German Enlightenment (Wieland, Schnabel, Gellert); the literature of the Sturm und Drang movement, the philosophical conception of the movement (J. G. Herder), the young Goethe and Schiller, the drama of the Sturm und Drang movement, the work of G. A. Goethe and Schiller, Weimar as a centre of cultural life, classical drama, joint artistic activity of Goethe and Schiller.

Cílem předmětu je zprostředkovat studentům přehled o německé literatuře 18. a počátku 19. století v evropském kontextu v období osvícenství, hnutí Bouře a vzdor a německé klasiky jako specifického proudu německé literatury. Nedílnou součástí kursu je vysvětlení hlavních literárněhistorických pojmů (Aufklärung, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, Klassik) a výklad vývojových tendencí převažujících literárních druhů a žánrů. Literární jevy jsou podávány na historickém, filosofickém a kulturním pozadí 18. a 19. století, včetně různých interpretací literárně-historického vývoje a přehledu hlavních estetických teorií. Důraz ve výkladu je kladen na racionální a sentimentální proud německého osvícenství a na tzv. Výmarskou klasiku (Goethe a Schiller). Práce v semináři se zaměří na vybrané texty daného období a zejména na rozbor básnických, prozaických a dramatických děl. Předmět obsahuje následující témata: filosofické základy osvícenství; racionalismus a sentimentalismus jako hlavní směry literatury osvícenství; bajky; lyrická tvorba v podobě hravé anakreontiky a vážného tzv. Lehrgedichtu; osvícenské divadlo (Gottsched, Lessing), vliv sentimentalismu (Klopstock), román v německém osvícenství (Wieland, Schnabel, Gellert); literatura hnutí Sturm und Drang; filosofická koncepce hnutí (J. G. Herder); mladý Goethe a Schiller, drama hnutí Sturm und Drang, tvorba G. A. Bürgera; Výmarská klasika: dílo Goetha a Schillera, Výmar jako centrum kulturního života, klasické drama, společná umělecká aktivita Goetha a Schillera.

Aim of the course

Studující:

• si osvojí vybraná díla německy psané literatury od osvícenství po období Výmarského klasicismu (včetně),
• interpretuje vybraná díla uvedených období (lyrika, dráma, próza),
• vyhodnotí relevantnost dobových textů a jejich možnou aplikaci ve školní výuce

- vyjmenuje hlavní představitele jednotlivých směrů a stěžejní díla,

- dokáže interpretovat a analyzovat vybraná díla (rané osvícenství, období Sturm und Drang, období Výmarského klasicizmu)

- uvede jejich možné využití ve školní výuce
