Annotation -
The Czech and General History V course focuses on the basic events and context of the period, the causes of the outbreak of the First World War, its course and the new world order. Attention is paid to the emergence of the Versailles system and the formation of new power groups and structures on the one hand, the world economic crisis in a broader context on the other, and finally the rise of new ideologies (fascism, Nazism and Soviet communism). Special attention will also be paid to the major cultural developments of the period under review and the efforts to unify them within totalitarian systems. The main objective of the course is to examine the historical context between the First and Second World Wars, and to trace the seeds of the conflicts of the subsequent "Cold War", the Cold War period and its end. Emphasis is also placed on explaining the basic problems of the internal development of the countries of the Western and Eastern blocs, the mutual relations of the superpowers, and describing the mechanisms and means of the gradual unification of Europe. The information gained from the lectures will be further deepened in the seminar by working with sources, edited texts and secondary literature. Topics: 1. World War I and the transformation of the Czech question. 2. The creation of the Versailles system, its opponents and Czechoslovakia in the 1920s. 3. Fascism, Nazism and Stalinism in the 1930s. 4. The events of 1938-1939 (Munich, the occupation of Czech lands and the beginning of World War II). 5. The Second World War and the Struggle for the Restoration of the Republic. 6. The Third Czechoslovak Republic and the Post-War World. 7. conflicts in the Middle East, the emergence of the state of Israel, decolonization; the "Third World" and Communist China 8. Europe and the first phase of the Cold War. 9. The first 'detente' between East and West and the gradual 'destalinization'. 10. Developments in the 1960s, the Prague Spring of 1968 and the Soviet occupation. 11. The development of the normalisation regime and the opposition in Czechoslovakia. 12. The fall of the communist regime, the building of a new democracy and the disintegration of the Czechoslovak Republic.
