The course, which is designed for the future authors of Bc theses, aims at developing the productive and receptive skills associated with academic writing. It focuses on a critical approach to the sources, editing, and the basics of methodology and ethics of the disciplines which the students will explore in their Bc theses.

1. English academic writing – aims, motivation, professional ethics, specific features.
2. The structure of academic texts, argumentation.
3. Research in literature.
4. Linguistic research.
5. Socio-cultural research.
6. The phases of writing an academic text (the process approach).
7. The literature and sources.
8. Citation guidelines (MLA).
9. Paraphrasing and plagiarism.
10. Academic lexis.

The main goal of the seminar is to prepare students for exploring a novel topic individually and independently. The seminar builds students’ awareness of the literature, sources, methods and materials which they will rely on when writing their Bc thesis, and of the features of academic writing. 1. The basic steps of preparing and writing the Bc thesis. Selecting the field (literature, linguistics, cultural studies, translation) and the topic of the thesis. Formulating the description of the thesis and the assignment. The structure of the Bc thesis. Research questions and hypotheses. Sources and literature. 2. Academic writing: the structure of the text, language, strategies. Working with sources, citation guidelines. 3. Students’ individual consultations with the potential Bc thesis supervisors, researching the literature, selection of a suitable topic, formulation of the thesis assignment.
