Annotation -
This course offers an analysis of current trends in the relationship between language and culture in the context of didactic issues, introduces students to the issue of multilingualism and the requirements set by curriculum documents in this area, the communicative and intercultural communicative competence of pupils, the principles of developing intercultural competence of pupils in the context of a multicultural school environment, the issue of bilingualism.

Aim of the course -

The student understands the relationship between language and culture and their reciprocity.

The student knows the concepts of multilingualism, multiculturalism, bilingualism, explains their meaning and specifics in the educational environment.

The student understands the concept of intercultural communicative competence and knows strategies to develop his/her own level of communication skills in a polycultural environment.

The student distinguishes cultural specificities of different types of texts.

Course completion requirements -

1. Active participation in the seminar. Extra points will be awarded for particularly active participation in seminar discussions.

2. Developing a pre-approved topic.

Examples of topics:

  • Challenges of developing modern intercultural communicative competence in teaching foreign languages.
  • Communication of cultures: verbal and non-verbal interaction.
  • Modern problems of bilingual education.
  • The importance of understanding cultural context when learning a foreign language.
  • Types of cultural texts and ways of interpreting them
  • Multilingualism and multiculturalism in modern schools.
