This option aims to organize and consolidate the studentsʼ knowledge of the systemic linguistic disciplines before they take the Comprehensive exam in English linguistics. The topics are first treated theoretically and then demonstrated in practice using authentic material.
Themes:
1. Typological features of the English system; comparison between conspicuous features of English and Czech
2. Basic terminology of langue disciplines (linguistic units at diverse levels and the relationships between them); sign.
3. Prominent phonological features (segmental and suprasegmental)
4. Prominent morphological features (parts of speech and morphological categories)
5. Prominent lexical features (word-formation processes, sense relations between words and stratification of the wordstock)
6. Prominent syntactic features (simple sentence, non-finite clauses, complex, compound and multiple sentence)
