Annotation -
Comparative education, one of the main pedagogical disciplines, examines and compares educational phenomena and school systems in two or more countries. It focuses on trends and developments in education world-wide and how are education systems compared.

Students should understand the focus and methods of comparative education and should be able to examine education systems and compare them while reflecting trends and developments in education world-wide.

1. Comparative education, its methods and functions.
2. Historical development of comparative education.
3. An analysis of education systems in different countries, ISCED classification, typology of education systems.
4. Organizations focusing on comparative education.
5. International comparison of educational outcomes of students.

Learning outcomes

Student defines comparative education as a dicipline. Student characterizes the phases of historical development of comparative education and its selected representatives. Student characterizes the ISCED classification and its levels and explains its use in international comparisons. Student describes key organizations and institutions focused on comparative education. Student characterizes international large-scale assessment studies in education (PISA, TIMSS, TALIS, PIRLS, ICILS) and compares them in terms of their basic characteristics (focus, partipants etc.).
