Definition of the object of studies. F. de Saussure and his ideas. The birth of structuralist linguistic schools: the school of Geneva, Prague and Copenhagen in Europe and descriptivism in the USA. Establishment and significance of the Prague linguistic circle. Other tendencies of the linguistic thinking of the 20th century. General problems of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicology.
