Annotation -
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the main developmental tendencies of Russian literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries as part of the history of Russian society, its thought and culture in general (including emigrant artistic production) and in comparison and connection with the development of the European and Czech societies. Through concrete work with an artistic text, to introduce students to the possibilities of using beautiful literature in foreign language teaching, to contribute to the broadening of the students' overall cultural outlook, to the enrichment and cultivation of their intellectual needs, to the deepening of their ability to orient and independently evaluate on the basis of acquired knowledge.

Aim of the course -

Students

- understand the history of Russian literature in a European context,

- know literary movements, genres, representative and key works of Russian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries,

- based on their own reading and theoretical knowledge, they critically engage with and interpret works of art.

Course completion requirements -

Conditions for credit:

    Active participation in seminars (with attendance at least 75% of the seminars),
    continuous completion of all assignments,
    completion of a credit test, with one regular and one make-up test, with a minimum pass rate of 70% for each test

Successful completion of the credit test is a prerequisite for passing the examination (see examination requirements).

Requirements to the exam -

The examination will be oral. The student discusses with the examiner one of the topics drawn (see the course syllabus for the topics) and leads a discussion on the works read (see below for required reading), and may consult his/her own reading diary, which is the student's own notes on the book. The journal may include quotations from the work, notes from the author's journals regarding the creation of the work, the content of the work, and the names of the characters. A reading journal is not a set of lectures on a subject or a set of synopses of critical and scholarly articles. The student submits the reading log to the instructor for review prior to the examination. If, during the oral discussion, the student cannot recall some of the data and information and knows that it is in his/her reading log, he/she may consult it.

1. Russian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the "Silver Age" of Russian literature. Russian symbolism, Russian modernism, decadence.
2. Neoclassical line in Russian literature, Acmeism. Continuing line of Russian realism. Experimental Russian literature, futurism, postfuturism.
3. Russian literary emigration. Prague Russian writers.
4. The theme of war in 20th century Russian literature.
5. Humour and satire in Russian literature of the 20th and early 21st century.
6. Russian drama of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
7. Antiutopia in Russian literature of the 20th century.
8. Magical realism in Russian literature.
9. So-called Soviet literature, literature in the spirit of socialist realism.
10. Forbidden, samizdat, lager literature. Rural and urban prose.
11. Poetry of Russian bards, author's song.
12. Russian postmodernism. Contemporary Russian literature, new wave.

Students
- explain and correctly uses literary science terminology, define basic literary science concepts,

- demonstrate literary theory using examples of fiction literature from the required reading list,

- state the periodization of Russian literature, characterize it and explain the cultural and historical context of Russian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries,

- explain the different literary movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. list their distinctive features, genres, representatives, works,

- explain the importance of the main representatives of 20th and 21st century literature, characterize their works and literary contribution,

- demonstrate all theoretical knowledge by reading works from the required reading list.
