The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the representative works of British Romanticism and Victorian period and the social, historical and cultural context of the period. The choice of literary works reflects their importance for the period and also the richness and variety of themes and approaches.

Cílem kurzu je podat stručný přehled anglické literatury 19. století za předpokladu aktivní účasti studentů na tomto procesu. Literatura tohoto období je představena jak skrze analýzu jednotlivých děl a popis chronologického vývoje, tak i společensko-kulturních a historických vlivů, které se na něm podílely.

5. Viktoriánské období – filosofický, společensko-kulturní a historický kontext

The course is reading-based – preparation for and participation in weekly seminars are necessary; regular attendance (2 absences in total allowed). (The reading materials are to be found in Moodle: https://dl1.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=8078, password: Austen)
Written exam – min. score: 70% for passing, max: 2 re-sittings (3 possible sittings in total, language and stylistic skills are part of the overall assessment)
