The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of German written literature on the period of 750- 1700, cultural background and in the European context from the beginning to the Baroque period. Content of lectures: Monuments of the Germanic era. Early Middle Ages. Historical and spiritual climate. Cultural centers. Caroligne renaissance. Otonian Renaissance. Clugnian movement. Beginnings of religious drama. Pre-court epic. High Middle Ages. Definition, European context. Courtly and heroic epic. Lyric: Minnesang, Spruchdichtung, vagantic poetry. Representatives of individual genres. Late Middle Ages. Scholastics and mystics. Cultural centers. Poetry and Meistersang, epic, didactic literature, beginnings of German prose, spiritual drama, carnival games. Renaissance-humanism-reformation. Centers and leaders. Luther. Didactic and fool’s literature. Forms of drama. Folk reading books. Baroque. Transformations of genres. Main representatives of Baroque literature. Content of the seminar: Introduction to selected texts of the period. Analysis and interpretation of texts (eg Germanic sagas, Minnesang, work of Johannes von Tepl, "fool’s" literature, Fastnachtspiel, Baroque epic, etc.).
