Course profile: This course aims to give the students a general outline of the most significant events in American literature, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on canonical authors. These seminars complement lectures which reside in presenting a particular literary movement, including its social and cultural background. These are then followed by a close reading session which focuses on the selected seminar texts (short stories, plays, novels/extracts etc.).
The lectures provide a theoretical context for an understanding of Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism; the seminars focus on an interpretation of most important works of the period.
Requirements: 80% attendance (2 unexplained absences are permissible);
Either a short handwritten essay (450 words), written against the clock at the end of the term, or a longer typewritten essay (1300 words) on one of the assigned topics.

Profil kurzu: Předmět "Americká literatura I" tvoří komplementární kurz, v jehož přednáškové části se student obeznámí se základní vývojovou linií americké literatury od 17 až po konec 19. století, včetně historického a sociálního pozadí. Tato výkladová část je prakticky podepřena ilustrativními ukázkami americké prózy a v menší míře i poezie a dramatu. Přednášky tedy v chronologickém sledu uvádějí konkrétní (víceméně jednolitá) období v americké literatuře, která jsou vesměs koncipována jako literární reflexe daného historického období. Na přednášku pak navazuje tzv. "close reading session", tedy řízené čtení zadaných seminárních textů v angličtině, které lze vnímat jako průvodní materiál k přednáškovému výkladu.
Požadavky k udělení zápočtu: Aktivní účast v seminářích, kratší závěrečná esej a zpětná vazba (písemná reakce, v problematičtějších případech pohovor). Je možno psát buď kratší monitorovanou esej (450 slov) nebo delší esej s domácí přípravou (1300 slov).
