The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the largest and most influential English-language literature as it has developed over the course of the 20th century. The main attention will be spent on the tendencies of American literary production throughout the century (from modern Realism through Modernism to Post-modernism). In addition, the course will focus on ethnic literatures both within and outside the mainstream of American letters.

Cílem kurzu je získání základní orientace v kvantitativně největší a současně nejvlivnější anglofonní literatuře, v kterou se americká literatura v průběhu 20. století vyvinula. Hlavní pozornost bude věnována jak hlavním směrům literární tvorby v průběhu století (od moderního realismu přes modernismus k postmodernismu), tak vzniku etablovaných etnických literatur, jež se stávají součástí i zdroji inspirace hlavního proudu americké literatury.
