This course gives a short outline of English literature from its very beginnings to the emergence of the novel, pointing out the social and historical background of literary development. As it covers a very broad time-span, the course is highly selective and focuses on the representative works and major tendencies of various periods.

Kurz si klade za cíl podat stručný přehled anglické literatury od jejích prvopočátků až do vzniku románu, přičemž vysvětluje sociální a historické vlivy, které se podílely na jejím vývoji. Vzhledem k omezenému rozsahu je vysoce selektivní a soustřeďuje se na reprezentativní díla a hlavní tendence různých historických období.
