No prerequisite knowledge assumed. Taught once in two years, in school years beginning in odd calendar years.

Linguistic and physical structure of human speech, phonology and phonetics. Articulatory and acoustical phonetics. Spectrogram reading.

Writing systems: phonologic, syllabic, logographic; representation and encoding; missing information; desambiguation.

Text processing. Utterance chunking. Rule-driven and corpus-driven methods. Phonetic transcription: letter-to-sound rules, dictionaries, stochastic desambiguation, syntactic analysis.

Prosody description and modelling.

Speech synthesis: formant synthesis, time domain and frequency domain methods. Unit concatenation, prosody manipulation. Voice coding, OLA, LPC synthesis.

Speech corpus and speech unit inventory creation. Unit selection, Viterbi algorithm. Semiautomatic methods. Pitch detection using autocorrelation.

Dialogue systems, TTS mark-up languages.
