Syllabus -

1. The concept of continuous bodies. Tensor algebra and differential calculus of tensor and vector fields. Differential operations.

2. Kinematics. Deformation, configuration and movement of continua. Deformation gradient, strain, compatibility conditions, velocity gradient and rate of strain.

3. Conservation laws. Stress tensor. Balance equations and Clausius- Duhem inequality. General equilibrium equations, Cauchy stress tensor. Mechanical field equations.

4. Constitutive theory. Principle of objectivity, determinism and local interactions. Internal constraints, material symmetry. Classification of materials.

5. Boundary-value problems.
