Basic structure of the stratosphere and mesosphere, stratosphere-troposphere exchange
Aim of the course -
Last update: T_KMOP (04.04.2008)

To make students familiar with recent progress in the stratosphere and mesosphere. As the upper boundary of prediction models is increasing (ALADIN in the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute ~30 km, MetOffice experimentally already in the mesosphere), the request on knowledge of the upper atmosphere is increasing.

  • Basic structure of the stratosphere and mesosphere
  • Temperature, geopotential and wind fields in the stratosphere and mesosphere and their seasonal differences.
  • Seasonal features of circulation in the lower stratosphere, sudden warmings in the stratosphere and their impact on stratospheric and mesospheric processes, possible mechanisms of sudden stratospheric warmings.
  • Ozone and water vapour and their role in the stratosphere and mesosphere.
  • Stratosphere-troposphere exchange - principal role of tropical region, Brewer-Dobson circulation.
  • Role of waves (planetary, gravity and tidal waves) in the stratosphere-mesosphere system.
  • Long-term trends in the stratosphere and mesosphere, particularly in ozone content and temperature, their origin (anthropogenic ozone depletion, greenhouse cooling - yes, cooling), and impact on climate.
