Climatological characteristics and structure of the stratosphere, annual cycle of meteorological variables in the stratosphere, sudden stratospheric warmings, ozone and its role in the atmosphere, (photo)chemical processes.

Syllabus -

Basic structure of the stratosphere.

Temperature, geopotential and wind fields in the stratosphere and their seasonal differences.

Seasonal features of circulation in the lower stratosphere; sudden stratospheric warmings and their impact on stratospheric processes; potential mechanism of sudden stratospheric warmings.

Role of the ozone in the stratosphere. Basics of the stratospheric ozone chemistry.

Stratosphere-troposphere mass exchange? principal role of tropical region; Brewer-Dobson circulation.
