Annotation -
English for specific purposes (ESP) - grammar, vocabulary, style, specialized texts on mathematics. The course is a preparation course for an international examination in English for mathematicians and it is included in the credit system of the Faculty. The credit is a one of the requirements for the examination English for Mathematicians, UNIcert III. Enrollment in this subject is limited. The subject is open for students from the second year of their study.

Course completion requirements -

To meet the requirements it is necessary to participate in class regularly, actively work in the classroom and fulfil all homework assignments, including a group project. The nature of the subject's examination excludes the repetition of such examination.

Trzeciak: Writing Mathematical Papers in English (European Mathematical Society, 1995); J. Vedral: Anglicko-český matematický slovník (JTP, 2002), plus various authentic texts on mathematical analysis, algebra and geometry.

Syllabus -

The course focuses on the specific features of academic mathematical discourse. The course enhances students’ understanding of primary academic sources and at the same time develops their ability to produce specialised texts. Moreover, the course improves students’ speaking skills.

Main topics:

  • formal vs. informal English in mathematics
  • constructing a mathematical text: notation, definition, theorem, proof
  • language structure and presentation of a proof both in written and spoken form
  • pronunciation - typical mistakes, general tendencies, stress placement

Other topics are chosen according to students’ needs.

The course constitutes part of the preparation for the international exam Unicert III - English for Mathematicians.
